He acquired the .32 semi-automatic pistol used to committ the crime from his uncle's house and brought it to school to show off. On the day of the shooting, he pulled the gun from his pants and pointed it at Kayla and yelled, "I don't like you!" before fatally shooting her in the neck. She died soon after being shot, despite the teacher's call for emergency services. Dedrick's name was not revealed to the press for some time after the shooting because of his age.
