Gary Scott Pennington was upset over a bad grade on his report card.  So he armed himself and invaded Deanna McDavid's seventh period English class with 22 students.  Deanna, one day shy of her 49th birthday, was grading papers when Gary walked in and fired a shot toward her. He missed.  She asked him what he was doing and he responded with a bullet smashing into her right temple.  She died instantly, still holding the grading pen. Custodian Marvin Hicks heard the gunfire and entered the room to see what had caused the noise. Gary killed him with a shot to the stomach. Gary then holds the 22 students hostage, letting 2-3 go at a time before surrendering at 3:00 p.m. without further bloodshed.
