Artesia is relatively a small community around 14,000 people. In today's society it seems to be pretty common to have gangs in the area. We are however lucky not to have problems like the bigger cities.
I have noticed one main gang in Artesia with others on the rise. You guessed it the South Side Sureno's 13. Their color of choice is blue and they are for the most part of Hispanic backgrounds. They are responsible for some of the crimes that occur in and around Artesia. One that sticks out in my mind is in April of 2007 three Officers were involved in a shootout with a known gang member. luckily no one was killed.
Another gang in Artesia is the mortal enemy of South Side, the North Side Locals. Their numbers are not as strong as the South Side but are just as dangerous. Their color of choice is red and like the South Side they are mostly of Hispanic backgrounds. Please don't miss understand me there are all walks of life in these gang's. I can't really testify to the level of crime they are involved in.
There is one group that concerns me the most. They call them selfs Juggalos. I'm not sure if they are classified as a gang yet but I think their numbers are strong. I have read little on line and have discovered they follow a band by the name of Insane Clown Possie, and there is a lot of talk about a dark carnival. Their symbol seems to be of a hatchet man and have seen some graffiti around town pertaining to that group. Hopefully they are being monitored and documented as a gang.
In short I feel gangs are going to be anywhere you go. I just hope the community can support our law enforcement and help them when possible. The greatest weapon we have is education and awareness.

Artesia has approximatley 5 or 6 documented gangs in the area. Their illegal activities span everything from shoplifting to drug sales. The gangs are listed as follows.
The Surenos are the largest and most active gang in Artesia. There are three different sets of Surenos in the town. They are the San Jose Dogs also known as "SJD", Varrio Trece Locos(VTL), Nasty boys, and Placasos. SJD and VTL are at war at this time, and have been involved in several shootings this year. The Placasos stay quiet and fly under the radar. The Nasty boys are aligned with VTL and are involved in the war with SJD. Surenos generally wear blue or black, and use the number 13 to indentify themselves along with the initials of their set.
Next is the Nortenos. Also Known as North Side Locos "NSL", they are not as active as the Surenos and have only been involved in a few incidents this that I know of. Nortenos wear red and identify with the number 14
A new gang to the are is known as the Insane Clown Posse, or ICP. The ICP is made up of very young teenagers who call themselves Juggalos and Juggalettes. They use the hatchet man for their symbol, and are mostly involved in tagging or grafitti, and criminal damage type incidents. The ICP do not identify with any one color or symbol other than the hatchett man. They tend to wear skater type clothing. Only one set exists at this time which is Known as B.O.T.
Another new gang is known as Brown Pride. Very little is known about them at this time.
