Such alliances are not uncommon, especially in California.
Due to movies like "Colors" and so on. People assume Bloods and Crips are ALL mortal enemies. However, within Southern California (L.A.), there are Crip sets who's most rivaled enemy are other Crip sets. For example, Hoover Criminal Gangsters are enemies with all Neighbor Hood Crips, such as Rollin 40's, 60's, 90's, 100's and so on. Matter of fact, due to the amount of Crip enemies; in 1997 the Hoovers changed their set from Hoover Crip Gang, or Hoover Crips to Hoover Criminals or Hoover Criminal Gangsters. The only Hoover set who still loosely identifies themselves as Crips are 52nd St. Hoovers (5 Deuce Hoover Crips). The 83 Gangster Crips (8 Trey Gangster Crips) also have more Crip enemies then Blood enemies.
There are several Crip sets, who's territories are in close proximity with Blood and/or Piru sets. These sets also live in peace. Also there is a war in Southern California, between many black and Hispanic (Sureno) gangs. Which has caused many gang sets to work together.
I hope this clears some things up or maybe confused things a little bit more. Just remember, not all Crips and Bloods are the same. If they were they would not have different identifying sets.
